Admission

Dear prospective students,

thank you very much for your interest in the Master's program in Econometrics of the Statistics Department of TU Dortmund University, and the Economics Departments of TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-University Bochum and University of Duisburg-Essen. On this page you will find information regarding the application and enrolment process. Also, have a look our FAQs and at our program website.

Step 0

Inform yourself about the contents of our study program.

Keep in mind that our study program is based on the theoretical (mathematical) fundamentals of statistics to derive advanced methods of Econometrics. Therefore, consider whether this really is the right program for you. We would be pleased if you finally decide to study at our universities.

An online self-assessment test is available for you to assess and reflect your knowledge of statistics, economics, and econometrics so that you can form an opinion on whether the program is right for you. Taking the test ist mandatory, please process it carefully. The self-assessment can be downloaded here (PDF). Please click here to submit your self-assessment.

Step 1

Please note that you may only apply for winter intake.

Check that you meet the following criteria for admission to our Econometrics program:

  1. suitable Bachelor’s degree. There are two possibilities:

    1. You have completed a first Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics or Mathematics at TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-University Bochum, or University of Duisburg-Essen.

    2. You have obtained a Bachelor’s degree at another German or foreign university. In this case, admission is possible if your studies are assessed by us as being economics/statistical/mathematical oriented.

A student who applies for the degree program must have earned a solid basic knowledge in the area of economics, represented by course work worth at least 15 ECTS credits, and in the area of mathematics, statistics, econometrics and empirical economic research, represented by course work worth at least 25 ECTS credits.

  2. The final grade of the Bachelor's degree previously reviewed for application must be at least “good” (2.7) in the German system. No exception can be made from this rule. Your final grade will be converted into the German grading system as part of the application process. Moreover, an average grade of at least 3.0 must have been achieved in the modules corresponding to the area of mathematics, statistics, econometrics and empirical economic research. The examination board can request stipulations for incomplete prerequisites.

  3. Proof of competencies in the English language, which must at least correspond to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Here, we accept the following proofs:

    1. a German certificate of general qualification for university entrance (English from 5th or 7th grade up to the Abitur),

    2. an internationally recognised language certificate,

    3. a diploma from an English-speaking school or an English-speaking course of study,

    4. comparable evidence.

Proof of German language skills is NOT required. The entire program can be completed without knowledge of the German language. Even though the entire program can be completed without German language skills, German language skills are necessary or at least helpful in dealing with authorities, in many areas of daily life or, in some cases, on campus. The university offers a wide range of language courses.

Owing to legal regulations, other criteria such as Master's degrees, professional experience, and certificates from further (professional) education according to legal regulations cannot be used for the assessment. All three criteria must be fulfilled for admission. If you have not acquired the required credit points mentioned in 1. above, but your Bachelor's degree appears suitable beyond that, the Joint Examination Committee may admit you on the condition that you acquire still missing qualifications by taking our Requirement courses at TU Dortmund University.

The program has no numerus fixus. If you meet the criteria above, you are guaranteed a place at our universities.

Step 3

Organisation of the study programme: Congratulations, you have made it and are enrolled for our Master in Econometrics. The following information might be relevant for the start of your studies:

  1. Extra Requirements: if you have not completed a Bachelor in Statistics/Economics/Mathematics at TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-University Bochum or, University of Duisburg-Essen, you have probably been admitted under conditions. These extra requirements have to be fulfilled after enrolment and before attending the course Case Studies. Please note that in the case of extra requirements your studies may take longer than two years.

  2. Study organization: there will be orientation events at the beginning of your studies. These will take place at the beginning of October for winter intake together with the newcomers in the Bachelor's programs of our department. Participation is highly recommended as you will receive a lot of userful information regarding your studies and can get to know your fellow students and the campus. Also join our Moodle room, where you can find a lot of useful information bundled together and ask questions at any time.

  3. Precourses: Before the start of the lectures you should check out our precourses which will help you to prepare for your upcoming master and to refresh your memories of all the important stuff from your bachelor courses. There will be 3 different precourses.

The first one is a statistics precourse in German language which covers especially the most important content of the statistics bachelor. It takes place 3 weeks live on campus or via zoom (due to the corona virus). It is recommended if you prepare for the statistics master.

The second and third precourses are online courses on the learning platform moodle in English language. They have no fixed timetable. So, you can do them where and whenever you want.

One of them is a online statistics course. It mostly covers the same content as the first precourse and is recommended for both master's programmes Data Science and Econometrics. The other one is a data science course. This course is highly recommended for data science students only. Of course, econometrics students are also welcome to do this course.
