Enrollment in the Master Statistics / Data Science / Econometrics for foreign students

  1. What are the formal requirements for the Master of Statistics?

    - University entrance qualification (usually your previous school leaving certificate). Proof of German language skills ( language certificate , see also "Language requirements") - Proof of an equivalent Bachelor's degree with at least a good grade (2.7 in the German grading system).

  2. What are the formal requirements for the Master Data Science?

    - University entrance qualification (usually your previous school leaving certificate). You can find out whether your foreign educational qualification is recognized by the TU Dortmund here

    - Proof of English language skills (language certificate, see also "Language requirements")

    - Proof of a Bachelor's degree with at least a good grade (2.5 in the German grading system) that meets our content criteria (see here).

  3. What are the formal requirements for the Master Econometrics?

    - University entrance qualification (usually your previous high school diploma). To find out whether your foreign educational qualification is recognized by the TU Dortmund University, please click here.

    - Proof of English language skills (language certificate, see also "Language requirements")

    - Proof of a Bachelor's degree with at least a good grade (2.7 in the German grading system) containing at least 15 ECTS in one of the subject areas Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science and at least 15 ECTS in the other two subject areas combined.

  4. Is my previous degree equivalent to the Bachelor Statistics / do I meet the requirements for the Master Data Science or Econometrics?

    In order to enter one of our Master's programs with an external degree, certain prerequisites must be met

    :

    Master Statistics:

    In order to be admitted to the Master's degree in Statistics, a degree equivalent to the Bachelor's degree in Statistics at TU Dortmund University must be presented. (compare here the module handbook for the Bachelor of Statistics). The modules should not only be comparable in terms of content, but also in terms of scope (ECTS) and form of examination. If you are not sure, you are welcome to send an e-mail to the student advisory service for a non-binding assessment. Please do not forget to attach a list of your previous academic achievements including module handbooks! You can submit an official application for recognition of equivalence to the Examination Office for Statistics . The Examination Office will then issue you with a certificate of equivalence and any conditions, if applicable

    Master Econometrics:

    In order to be admitted to the Master Econometrics, a Bachelor's degree must be presented in which:
    • At least 15 ECTS passed in the subject area Statistics.
    • At least 15 ECTS have been passed in the department of Economics
  5. Where do I apply for the Master's program in Statistics / Data Science at TU Dortmund University?

    The application is done online via the International Office. EU/EEA nationals apply here. Non-EU/EEA nationals apply here.

  6. What are the deadlines for the application?

    Applications to the Master's programs can be made for both the winter and summer semesters. The application periods are currently as follows: winter semester: non-EU/EEA: 15. March to July 15 EU/EEA: 15. March to enrollment deadline Summer semester: non-EU/EEA: 15 November to 15. January EU/EEA: November 15 until enrollment deadline.

  7. Is there anywhere I can find out the status of my application?

    Unfortunately, the Student Advisory Service of the Department of Statistics does not have access to your application documents. If you have any questions, please contact the International Office. However, the International Office will contact you as soon as your application has been processed.

  8. What documents do I need for the application?

  9. What happens after the application?

    If you have received an admission letter, you can enroll for your studies in the period stated therein with the documents mentioned (see also the following questions). How to prepare for your studies in Germany (e.g. visa, health insurance, housing, etc.) can be found here.

  10. How do I enroll for the Master's program?

    Enrollment takes place in person during the officehours of the Admissions Department(office hours) or by mail. Details and required documents can be found here (EU/EEA) or here (non-EU/EEA).

  11. Which documents do I (necessarily) need for enrollment?

    - the letter of admission

    - signed and filled out application for enrollment

    - copy of passport/ID card, if applicable, with copy of valid visa for study purposes/residence permit

    - officially certified copy of secondary school leaving certificate and officially certified copy of translations (German or English)

    - Proof of a German statutory health insurance (even if you are privately insured we need a certificate of a statutory health insurance)

    - officially certified copy of the language certificate

    - officially certified copy of the degree and officially certified copy of the translation (German or English)

  12. What are the deadlines for enrollment?

    The deadline for enrollment can be found in the admission letter. For the Master's programs of the Faculty of Statistics an extended enrollment period until 15.01. (winter semester) or until 15.06. (summer semester) applies, for the Master's programs Data Science and Econometrics the last Friday before the start of lectures applies. Exceptions are possible upon request, e.g. if the visa is delayed by a few days.

  13. My degree is not equivalent to Statistics / I am missing ECTS for the entry into the Master Data Science or Econometrics. Do I still have any chance?

    If your previous degree is not sufficient for direct entry into the Master's program, it may be possible to enroll in a higher semester of the respective Bachelor's program (see also the item "Is enrollment in a higher Bachelor's semester possible?"). After successful completion of the Bachelor's degree, it is possible to change to the desired Master's degree program, taking into account the admission requirements.

  14. I have professional experience in the field of data analysis. Does that help with my application for the Master's program?

    No, only the equivalence of the Bachelor's degree counts.
