Professor Dr. Claus Weihs, born on February 9, 1953, studied mathematics in Bonn from 1971 to 1978. He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Social and Economic Sciences at the University of Bonn. After obtaining his doctorate in mathematics, Mr. Weihs worked from 1985 to 1994 as a statistics consultant at Ciba-Geigy, Mathematical Applications Department, in Basel, Switzerland. In 1994 he became head of this department. Since 1995, he has held the chair of Computational Statistics at the Department of Statistics, University of Dortmund, Germany. From 1997 to 2009 he was a member of SFB 475, and since 2009 he has been a member of SFB 823. From 2004 to 2010 Mr. Weihs was chairman of the Society for Classification (GfKl), and from 2009 to 2012 he was dean of the Faculty of Statistics.

Mr. Weihs' research areas over the past 20 years have ranged from the development of numerical methods to error-invariance models to the development of expert systems for Exploratory Data Analysis and Design of Experiments, Statistical Methods for Quality Assurance, Music and Statistics, Classification Methods, and Life Sciences. Currently, Prof. Weihs works on statistical methods for the analysis of linguistic data.
