Start of Studies
We look forward to welcoming you to our department! Before the semester begins, we recommend taking the preparatory courses listed below and participating in orientation week.
Before starting your studies, a preparatory course in mathematics is helpful for reviewing high school material and getting familiar with university procedures. At the Technical University of Dortmund, such a three-week preparatory course is offered annually in September. For students in the Bachelor’s program in Data Science, the preparatory course in computer science —which also takes place in September—is also suitable.
Participation in the preparatory courses is voluntary and not mandatory.
The Department of Statistics offers new master’s students a total of three preparatory courses to refresh their knowledge of bachelor’s-level material in the fields of statistics and data science. Students are free to choose the courses they need to get their studies off to a successful start.
Important: To participate in these courses, you’ll need your UniAccount to access the Moodle learning platform. You’ll receive your UniAccount after you enroll. If you don’t have a UniAccount yet, we can set up temporary guest access for you. Please send us a short email at precourse@statistik.tu-dortmund-university.de with your admission letter attached.
The following is a brief overview of the three preparatory courses:
Preliminary Course in Statistics (taught in German)
The Master’s Preparatory Course in Statistics is a German-language online course designed to prepare students for the Master’s program in Statistics. It is intended primarily for students who did not earn their bachelor’s degree at the Department of Statistics, but it can of course also be used by students who earned their bachelor’s degree here to refresh their knowledge of the undergraduate material. German-speaking students in the Data Science and Econometrics programs may also take this course.
The course is an e-learning course. All materials (lecture videos, lecture notes, exercises, and solutions) are available at any time on TU Dortmund University’s internal learning platform, Moodle. This allows you to manage your time flexibly and means you do not need to be in Dortmund to participate.

Pre-Course Statistics (taught in English)
The Pre-Course Statistics is the English-language equivalent of the Introductory Statistics course. It is intended for students in the English-language Data Science and Econometrics programs, but can of course also be taken by students in the Master’s in Statistics program.
This is an e-learning course. All materials (lecture videos, course notes, exercises, and solutions) are available at any time on TU Dortmund University’s internal learning platform, Moodle. This allows you to manage your time flexibly and means you do not need to be in Dortmund to participate.
In addition, the course offers you the opportunity to become familiar with the technical terminology of statistics in English.

Pre-Course Data Science (taught in English)
The Data Science Pre-Course is also an e-learning course and covers key topics from the Data Science bachelor’s program. It is intended for students in the Data Science master’s program, but can of course also be taken by students in the Statistics or Econometrics master’s programs.
All materials (lecture videos, lecture notes, exercises, and solutions) are available at any time on TU Dortmund University’s internal learning platform, Moodle. This allows you to manage your time flexibly and means you do not need to be in Dortmund to participate.
In addition, the course offers you the opportunity to get accustomed to the technical terminology of statistics in English.

During the orientation sessions, there is usually a game café for all first-semester students in the Statistics and Data Science programs.
It’s a great opportunity to meet fellow students, get to know the university and the city, learn more about the minors in the Statistics program, put together your class schedule, and much more. The one-week O-Phase (orientation phase) is held every winter semester to welcome new students. The O-Phase usually takes place the week before classes begin.
