Studies

Coincidence? - We get to the bottom of everything!

Every day we encounter tables and graphs in newspapers, on television and on the Internet. That's why many people think that this is already statistics. In truth, there is much more behind it.

Statistics is the separation of chance and system, the inference from samples to populations, the identification of causal relationships and behavioral equations, or the finding of small needles in large haystacks.

In the wake of the modern data revolution, statistics is becoming increasingly important in almost all areas of business, science and everyday life. Planning clinical trials, quality control in industry, forecasting election results or economic growth rates all rely on modern statistics.

Statistics ...

... is that something for me?

Yes, if you enjoy mathematics and numbers and are not afraid of computers. Data analysis is often very computationally intensive, but you also need to have good communication skills and be able to grasp things quickly - much of the work is done with users in ever-changing problem areas.

... that's us!

A familiar faculty with about 800 students. This makes it possible to study in small groups with personal attention. About half of the students are women.

... the studies!

The Technical University of Dortmund offers five courses of study and degrees in the field of statistics. The Bachelor's programs are currently free of admission.

Bachelor of Statistics (6 semesters)

  • Fundamentals of mathematics and statistics
  • Application of statistical methods
  • Basics in a minor subject (e.g. economics, medicine, mechanical engineering)
  • Bachelor thesis (3 months)

Statistics Master (4 semesters)

  • Advanced lectures and seminars in statistics
  • Advanced courses in the minor subject
  • Master thesis (6 months)

Data Science Bachelor (6 semesters)

  • Basics of mathematics and statistics
  • Basics of databases and programming
  • Bachelor thesis (3 months)

Data Science Master (4 semesters)

  • English-language course of studies
  • Advanced lectures and seminars in statistics
  • Focus courses in computer science, mathematics or statistics
  • Master thesis (6 months)

Econometrics Master (4 semesters)

  • English-language program
  • Advanced lectures in statistics and mathematics
  • Special courses in econometrics
  • Master thesis (6 months)

... Emphases and career prospects!

In the Master's program in Statistics, you can additionally choose one of the following concentrations: - Biometrics - Applications in Medicine, Genetics and Ecology - Econometrics / Empirical Economics - Applications in Economics - Technometrics - Applications in Engineering and Natural Sciences - Official Statistics - EMOS: European Master in Official Statistics.

These specializations are based on the most important fields of work of our graduates. These include banks, stock exchanges and insurance companies, pharmaceutical research, the aerospace industry, market and opinion research institutes or the statistical offices of our country, to list just a few selected fields of work. However, neither the minor subject nor the major field of study are decisive for a later career - our education is flexible and allows for quick familiarization with all fields of work equally. Because of this wide range of possible applications, the job prospects for our students have always been excellent - the unemployment rate of our graduates has been close to zero percent for decades.
